Stanford Medical Scholars Research fellowships support medical student research, both locally and off-site. Students carry out research in an academic setting under the direction of faculty members here at the medical school, hospital and clinics, and throughout the University. The fellowships provide funding and units as Medical Scholars Research 370.
The following are important aspects of the Program:
- Students must register in Medical Scholars Research 370 (independent study) with their faculty research advisor.
This course
stipulates
that:
(a) each student have a Stanford faculty advisor (students doing research away — either travel or community — must have an onsite advisor as well as a Stanford advisor),
(b) the Committee on Medical Student Research and Scholarship oversee the program and,
(c) a rigorous process be upheld (submitting a proposal, having a faculty interview, writing a final report and giving an oral presentation). Eighteen units of credit are given for each quarter of 100% research.
- Funding is $12,000 per full-time quarter (1QFTE = 1 Quarter Full-Time Equivalent). Fellowship funds are for student support, not for research supplies or equipment. If a student receives an outside fellowship for the same research, the outside fellowship funds replace the medical scholars funds. Funding is only released when all research compliances and registration for Medical Scholars Research 370 are met. We do not provide funding for research started prior to a MedScholars application being approved by the committee.
- 1 FTEQ fellowship can be carried out 100% in one quarter, or divided into quarter increments as best fits the proposed research effort, such as:
- A student may register for up to four (4) units when combined with a 100% Medical Scholars quarter. The units must be approved by the faculty research advisor and MedScholars program prior to a student's registration.
- Teaching Assistantships/Research Assistantships and Clerkships are NOT permitted during 100% research quarters. You must verify ALL TA'ship/RA'ships and Clerkships - even those with percentages less than 100% during all MedScholars quarters (full-time or otherwise) - with the Med Scholars Program Coordinator prior to enrolling.
- Students will be assigned to one of the types of fellowships. There are Resident fellowships, Away Research fellowships, and Traveling fellowships. Fellowships of 4 quarters FTE are called Medical Scientist fellowships.
-
Applications to continue a fellowship within the same faculty research group have special conditions:
(a) If the continuation proposal is on a different project (but with the same faculty mentor), then reference should be made to previous work, but the proposal should be a “stand alone” (like new) proposal.
(b) If the continuation proposal is on the same project, then it should reflect on the prior proposal and discuss why there needs to be a continuation (e.g. research took longer than expected).
- Students are eligible for a maximum of 6 FTE quarters of research. It is suggested that students only do projects under one, two, or three primary advisors (i.e., it is not encouraged to do six different projects under six different advisors).
Here are a few examples of how students who graduated used all of their 6 FTE quarters during medical school (you do not need to use all 6 FTEQ):Student 1:
Project One - 4 FTE quarters, mentor A
Project Two - 1 Travel FTE quarter, mentor B
Project Three -1 FTE quarter, mentor C
Student 2:
Project One - 3 FTE quarters, mentor A
Project Two - 3 FTE quarters (including 1 FTE Travel), mentor A
Student 3:
Project One - 3 FTE quarters, mentor A
Project Two - 2 FTE quarters , mentor B
Project Three - 1 FTE quarter , mentor B - There are deadlines for applications each quarter. At any one deadline, students can apply to undertake a project of 1, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75, 2, 2.25, 2.5, 2.75, 3, 3.25, 3.5, 3.75, or 4 FTE quarters in length.
- There is no retro-active funding or credit for projects done without the explicit approval and instruction of the Medical Scholars Program.
four quarters of 25%, or
two quarters of 25% + one quarter of 50%, or
one quarter of 25% + one quarter of 75%, or
two quarters of 50%.
Students receiving MedScholars funding in any academic quarter in which they are also taking one or more clerkships must arrange to have a minimum number of weeks free from clerkships during that quarter. The number of required free weeks varies with the time commitment required by the MedScholars award. At the time of application, students in or starting clerkships are required to present their clerkship schedule demonstrating the following number of weeks free for their MedScholars project:
25% MedScholars during clerkships = 3 “free” weeks
50% MedScholars during clerkships = 6 “free” weeks
75% MedScholars during clerkships = 9 “free” weeks
100% MedScholars during clerkships = 11 “free” weeksThe committee does not view it as appropriate to fund a MedScholars award on the presumption that a student will be able to work on a MedScholars project during nights and weekends, “around” an otherwise full clerkship schedule.
The primary source of Stanford MedScholars fellowships are gifts made by private donors. These donations are frequently made by individuals who take an interest in the scholastic background, academic progress, and research activities of their aid. Recipients of a MedScholars grant may be required to write a personal letter of thanks and attend an annual donor recognition dinner.
