Student Responsibilities

Students may not have concurrent medical scholars grants and must complete any previously funded project prior to the start of funding of a Community Partnership Medical Scholars (CPMS) project. The student is responsible for timely submission of all required documentation for a project proposal and for arranging an interview with a Committee member prior to the Committee meeting (see above). Once a project is approved, the student is required to:

  1. Work on the project as proposed. CPMS funds are awarded for the specified project. The student must notify the director of PriSMS and submit a petition for change if there is any need to alter the scope or nature of the project. Should a student need to withdraw from the program due to unforeseen problems, such as inability to meet the advisor(s) expectations or personal hardship, the student must inform the PriSMS director and be prepared to return any monies disbursed.
  2. Work on the project during the quarters in which the student is in receipt of funding and/or academic credit. Students are responsible for setting up regular meetings or other forms of communication with their advisors to keep the advisor up to date on the status of the project. Students should realize that they may need to work on their project even when not in receipt of funding or academic credit in order to complete the project.
  3. Attend all CPMS research seminars during the funding period to which they are invited as designated CPMS grantees. These seminars are designed to foster communication between scholars and those interested in community-based research at Stanford.
  4. Present the completed project or project-to-date in oral, poster, or other suitable form in the community and on campus. The community presentation should be planned with and have the participation of the Community Partner organization. The campus presentation is preferably done in a public forum, such as the Annual Medical Student Research Symposium, a conference, or a community-based research seminar. Students are encouraged to submit their work to the Annual Medical Student Research Symposium, which welcomes submissions from CPMS recipients. If no suitable public forum is available for a student presentation, the student is encouraged to at least present the work to the advisor(s). All presentations must be coordinated with PriSMS staff.
  5. Submit the following documents together at the completion of the project:
    1. A written final report of the project summarizing the project's analyses should be submitted to the CPMS committee, in c/o Michaela Kiernan (mkiernan@stanford.edu) by the end of the last project quarter. This report should follow the American Journal of Public Health Brief Report format, which is ~800 words long, and includes an introduction, methods, results, discussion, references and tables/figures. Be sure to include a separate paragraph demonstrating the evidence of the impact of, or plans for implementation actions to be taken as a result of the research findings.

Listed below are the citations for three examples of published papers using the Am J Public Health Brief Report format. As of now, Lane Library does not have access to the PDF version of Am J Public Health. However, you can enter these citations into PubMed to print off an OVID form of the paper.

Danovaro-Holliday MC. et al. Identifying risk factors for rubella susceptibility in a population at risk in the United States. Am J Public Health. 2003;93, 289-291.

Raj A., Silverman JG. Immigrant South Asian women at greater risk for injury from intimate partner violence. Am J Public Health. 2003; 93, 435-437.

If the work is to be published, the manuscript can be the final report. A copy of all published work emanating from the CPMS project should be forwarded to Michaela Kiernan (mkiernan@stanford.edu), even if a prior report had been submitted as the completion report and even if a delay has occurred since completion of the grant and publication. Note: any publication (or other forum) which lists the student as author or co-author (or co-creator) must acknowledge the support of the CPMS program.

As you work on your project and write it up, keep in mind that you will want to include co-authors on poster presentations and journal manuscripts who make substantive contributions to your project. Depending upon their contributions, co-authors may include your faculty advisor(s), staff on your faculty advisor's research team who assist you in a significant way, your community advisor(s), and/or Michaela Kiernan, PhD, Research Director for CPMS. We recommend you print off the PDF form at the Annals of Internal Medicine webpage for an explanation of the criteria to use when determining co-authors based on the type of contributions they made (http://www.annals.org/shared/author_form.html). We also recommend you discuss the criteria for authorship with potential co-authors at two points in time: before you start data collection and before you start writing up your results.

    2. A brief statement (maximum 1 page) on how the study may influence the student's career outlook and how it may contribute to his or her future practice/teaching/career choices. This statement should be shared with the advisor(s) prior to the close of the project.

    3. Completion Report Form: The student is responsible for obtaining the Stanford faculty advisor's signature on this form and for submitting it with the above documents.
